Beyond Words: An Icon Painting Retreat
Monday, April 29; 9am through Friday, May 3; 5pm
Facilitated by Diane Hamel
Icons are doorways to the sacred; a stylized art form that is prayed into being by both beginners and those with much experience. Our 2019 icon – “St. Euphrosynus the Cook” – depicts a humble servant of God who obediently and patiently toiled in the kitchen, unappreciated, all the while retaining a deep and simple faith.
Legend tells us that a priest of the monastery was given a vision of heaven as an incredibly beautiful garden. To his great surprise he was shown that Euphrosynus, the lowly cook, dwelt there! In the vision the priest asked the cook for a portion of the wondrous bounty of this garden and was given three fragrant apples. Upon waking from his vision the priest found three apples in his handkerchief. The humble cook who had lived a life of virtue in obscurity was shown to be one God trusted to bestow the fruit of paradise.
People of all experience levels find writing an icon with celebrated iconographer Diane Hamel to be a richly rewarding experience. The retreat week will be spent in prayerful, gently-guided learning as you create a beautiful icon to take home and enjoy. A retreatant from a previous year said this of the retreat: “It helped me attempt painting like I may never have without this experience.
The five-day retreat includes 5 days of high-quality instruction, materials, and meals. A limited number of guest rooms are available at Transformations on a first come, first served basis.
